Remote tables

SQL Anywhere can access data located on different servers, both Sybase and non-Sybase, as if the data were stored on the local server (SQL Anywhere, Adaptive Server Enterprise, Oracle, IBM DB2, Microsoft SQL Server, and other ODBC data sources).

Location transparency of remote data is enabled by creating a Remote (local proxy) table that maps to the remote object. You can use a proxy table to access any object (including tables, views, and materialized views) that the remote database exports as a candidate for a proxy table.

Before you can map remote objects to a remote table, you have to:

1. Define the remote server where the remote data is located.
2. Map the local user login information to the remote server user login information if the logins on the two servers are different.

Must have RESOURCE authority. To create a table for another user, you must have DBA authority.

New  remote tables are created within Create Remote Table Wizard. In order to run the wizard you should either

select the Object | Create Database Object... main menu item;
select the Remote Tables icon in the Create Database Object dialog

or

select the Remote Tables list or any object from that list in the explorer tree;
select the Create New Remote Table... item from the popup menu

To create a new remote table with the same properties as one of the existing one has:

select the Object | Duplicate Database Object... main menu item;
follow the instructions of Duplicate Object Wizard.

Remote tables can be edited within Remote Table Editor. In order to run the editor you should either

select the remote table for editing in the explorer tree (type the first letters of the table name for quick search);
select the Edit Remote Table... item from the popup menu

To drop a remote table:

select the table to drop in the explorer tree;
select the Drop Remote Table item from the popup menu

and confirm dropping in the dialog window.
